Don't Be a Statistic! Follow These 5 Steps to Stick With Your Resolution!

Nothing comes easier than a promise, yet one of the hardest things to do is deliver on one! Now that the midnight toll of New Year’s Eve is fast approaching, we’re likely to find ourselves engaged in the self-promise of taking more control in 2013. While making that promise is usually the easy part, we’re going to make it just as easy to stick with your plan, and see your promise all the way through.

Be Accountable. Nothing gets you to do something more than being held accountable for it. So – create some accountability…tell your friends! If you brag to them all about how you’re going to lead a fitter lifestyle starting January, then the prospect of facing them without having done it should force your hand. The more people you tell, the more you’ll face your accountability.

Find Support. Don’t go it alone…get an ally. If you get a friend or coworker to commit to the same exercise plan as you, then you can help motivate one another, and be each other’s rally monkey. From getting each other out of bed, to meeting each other after work…there are plenty of ways in which having a workout buddy can be just the crutch you need.

Have a Plan. There’s an old saying: “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” Pick specific days and times to exercise, and put them in your calendar. You can also select particular exercises you want to do, or body parts you want to focus on. By having such a plan, exercising is far less intimidation, and feels much more manageable.

Get Motivated. If you think about why you make a resolution, then you have all the motivation you need. If you don’t like not being able to fit into a pair of jeans anymore, then remind yourself of that every time you’re due to work out. If you’re the “odd one out” among your friends who doesn’t participate in active interests such as road races, then think about the fun you could be having with them if you go and exercise. Something made you want to change; use that motivator as your extra push, and remind yourself of it every time you want to blow off a workout.

Find an Incentive. Everyone loves a reward. A prize. A pat on the back. Well, give yourself one! Make a deal with yourself – if you go through with every planned workout in a week, you get to go to your favorite restaurant for dinner. Or you get to spend $100 on whatever you want. Or maybe you get to eat your favorite food that you’ve denied yourself all week. Perhaps, if you’re doing really well, you can reward yourself for a full month of exercising, and give yourself a Grand Prize like concert tickets. (Maybe you can even get your BFF involved, and see if they’ll ‘sponsor’ you and buy that treat for you!).

This year, Ultimate Bootcamp is giving out our own incentive to anyone who commits to sticking with their New Year's resolution for the first eight weeks of the year: $100 in cold, hard cash. It's our New Year's Resolution Reward, and you have until Thursday, January 3rd to sign up and join us!

Follow these steps, and you’ll be far more likely to succeed. Before you know it, you’ll be enjoying a whole new you. And maybe next New Year’s Eve, you can pick a fun, rewarding resolution of going on more trips, instead of having to promise yourself that you’ll exercise. Here’s to you in 2013!

Life's Challenge - Andrew's Ultimate Bootcamp Success Story

I’ve had health woes my entire life. I lost over 100 lb in high school and lived a pretty healthy life then, but I lost my inspiration during and after college.

Fitness wasn’t meaningful anymore; my weight “rubberbanded” every month because of my poor lifestyle choices and my reluctance to make things better.

A few months ago, Ultimate Bootcamp put a stop to that. I have NEVER felt this challenged in my life—Ultimate Bootcamp has really transformed me.

It’s put my health on the right track and given me a tremendous confidence boost.

"I Can't Believe it!" - Stacey's Ultimate Bootcamp Success Story

What???  Well….I can’t believe it, but I’m going to be 40. After spending what seems like my whole adult life going to school, establishing a career and then starting a business, I realized I had let my well being take a back seat.

Forty was coming at me quick and I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to face it head on!

Stacey Before

I’ve never been one to shy away from a challenge, and boot camp is just that. It’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done. I could tell you about the weight I’ve lost or the strength I’ve gained, but the real reward is my new found confidence. Every day I leave boot camp, I say to myself, “I can’t believe I just did that!”

Needed Motivation - Alison's Ultimate Bootcamp Success Story

I always had a rule in college that I could either be doing schoolwork or working out. This rule kept me in pretty decent shape, but once I graduated, I had no pressure to work out anymore.

In the year I had been out of school, I’ve gained enough weight to outgrow all of my pants. I was pretty unhappy about the state of my body, but still couldn’t motivate myself to work out. I have never been a fan of group fitness classes, but my boyfriend loves boot camp classes and convinced me to just try it out.

Sweaty & sandy after Carson Beach Boot Camp

Well I tried it out and I am addicted, I really love Ultimate Bootcamp. Never have I worked out as hard as I do at boot camp. The group dynamic and the instructors really get me to push myself so much more than I ever would when working out by myself. After a session and a half, most of my pants are fitting again and after every class I feel fitter, stronger and faster.

Hyperpalatables and Food Addiction

Here it comes.  That irresistible urge.  The overwhelming need to fulfill your deepest desire.  It's a dream full of chocolate-covered deliciousness.  It's...your food cravings!

Maybe it's your inner Cookie Monster seeking a sugary fix. Or, perhaps you just NEED to sink your teeth into a juicy burger.  Would you like fries with that?  Of course! The salty crunch hits you with delight. You grin with happiness. But wait. You want more.

Your brain, or more specifically the dopamine in your brain, is urging you to seek rewards.  That happy grin you experience when biting in to your favorite food is exactly what the dopamine wants. Dopamine doesn't care if your body really requires food or not, it simply seeks a smile.

Food addiction has been a hotly contested topic in nutrition circles. Does food addiction even exist?  Can't people just control their cravings? New research shows that not only does food addiction exist, but that some foods might be even more addictive than cocaine!!!

Just Say No to Sugar
Overcomsumption of hyperpalatables - sugary, starchy, fatty or salty foods - interferes with the flow of dopamine in your brain.  Calorie-dense junk food smothers the reward that you feel after biting into your favorite food treats, leaving you wanting more.  And so begins the endless cycle of feeding a craving that can only be satisfied by eating more.

In modern times, we've become addicted to hyperpalatable foods like sugar-sweetened drinks and salty, starch-based snacks.  Literally addicted.

In the last few years, breakthrough research has opened our eyes to the complex nature of hyperpalatables and food addiction.

New studies shows that consumption of sugar-sweetened foods can induce the same long-term changes in neurochemical brain activity that chronic drug users experience.  Other researchers are finding that sugar is even more addictive than serious hard drugs like cocaine and heroin.

It's a pretty safe bet that we'll soon be faced with "Just Say No to Sugar" campaigns.

But kicking the hyperpalatable food habit isn't easy. In animal studies, rats have shown signs of withdrawal when their sugary diet disappeared from their cages. They got angry, fought with other rats and even became addicted to other drugs when offered.

Humans aren't that different.  How would you feel if someone stripped that half-eaten bag of potato chips out of your hand?  You would throw a fit just like the children on Jimmy Kimmel when their parents told them they at all their Halloween candy.

Luckily with the new body of knowledge surrounding food addiction and potential causes, help is more readily available through specialized nutritionists, doctors and Food Addicts Anonymous.

If you're looking for ways to be proactive about reducing the need for hyperpalatable food rewards, here are some tips:
  • Avoid contact with your favorite hyperpalatable foods.
Just as an alcoholic can't drink in moderation, you, most likely, will have a hard time eating just one of your favorite treats. Encourage colleagues to keep your favorite foods out of your sight.  Don't bring home foods from the grocery store you know you will ravage...even if your significant other wants you to buy it.
  • Rationalize your cravings
When you find yourself craving a bag of chocolate-covered pretzels, try telling yourself that "it's the dopamine talking". Then, ask yourself: "Will I regret not eating this food 24 hours from now?" Chances are you won't.

  • Identify Stress
Stress is toxic. I've never met someone who reached for a fresh salmon salad after a horrible work commute, a bad argument or a stressful day.  It's the hyperpalatable foods that we "de-stress" with.  Identify your sources of stress by writing them down (it's okay if it's a long list).  Choose one source of stress that you can better control over the next 30 days and tackle it.
  • Get a natural dopamine high.
Breathing exercises, meditation, yoga, walking and working out all release dopamine naturally. Checkout Natalia Sedo's guest blog about relaxation for other wellness tips.
