Don't Be a Statistic! Follow These 5 Steps to Stick With Your Resolution!

Nothing comes easier than a promise, yet one of the hardest things to do is deliver on one! Now that the midnight toll of New Year’s Eve is fast approaching, we’re likely to find ourselves engaged in the self-promise of taking more control in 2013. While making that promise is usually the easy part, we’re going to make it just as easy to stick with your plan, and see your promise all the way through.

Be Accountable. Nothing gets you to do something more than being held accountable for it. So – create some accountability…tell your friends! If you brag to them all about how you’re going to lead a fitter lifestyle starting January, then the prospect of facing them without having done it should force your hand. The more people you tell, the more you’ll face your accountability.

Find Support. Don’t go it alone…get an ally. If you get a friend or coworker to commit to the same exercise plan as you, then you can help motivate one another, and be each other’s rally monkey. From getting each other out of bed, to meeting each other after work…there are plenty of ways in which having a workout buddy can be just the crutch you need.

Have a Plan. There’s an old saying: “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” Pick specific days and times to exercise, and put them in your calendar. You can also select particular exercises you want to do, or body parts you want to focus on. By having such a plan, exercising is far less intimidation, and feels much more manageable.

Get Motivated. If you think about why you make a resolution, then you have all the motivation you need. If you don’t like not being able to fit into a pair of jeans anymore, then remind yourself of that every time you’re due to work out. If you’re the “odd one out” among your friends who doesn’t participate in active interests such as road races, then think about the fun you could be having with them if you go and exercise. Something made you want to change; use that motivator as your extra push, and remind yourself of it every time you want to blow off a workout.

Find an Incentive. Everyone loves a reward. A prize. A pat on the back. Well, give yourself one! Make a deal with yourself – if you go through with every planned workout in a week, you get to go to your favorite restaurant for dinner. Or you get to spend $100 on whatever you want. Or maybe you get to eat your favorite food that you’ve denied yourself all week. Perhaps, if you’re doing really well, you can reward yourself for a full month of exercising, and give yourself a Grand Prize like concert tickets. (Maybe you can even get your BFF involved, and see if they’ll ‘sponsor’ you and buy that treat for you!).

This year, Ultimate Bootcamp is giving out our own incentive to anyone who commits to sticking with their New Year's resolution for the first eight weeks of the year: $100 in cold, hard cash. It's our New Year's Resolution Reward, and you have until Thursday, January 3rd to sign up and join us!

Follow these steps, and you’ll be far more likely to succeed. Before you know it, you’ll be enjoying a whole new you. And maybe next New Year’s Eve, you can pick a fun, rewarding resolution of going on more trips, instead of having to promise yourself that you’ll exercise. Here’s to you in 2013!

Shaved 17 Minutes off My Personal Record - Amanda's Ultimate Bootcamp Success Story

Me Passing My Brother
I was never the “athlete” growing up in comparison to my younger brother (the natural at all sports).

After participating in UBC for 6+ months, my brother and I ran our 3rd half marathon together with our family present and placing bets on the winner. I not only shaved off 17 minutes from my PR last year but I also passed my brother in the last mile and beat him by 3 minutes! He now talks about doing bootcamp in the future so this doesn’t happen again.

Me and My brother post-race
I want to thank Ultimate Bootcamp for this once in a lifetime victory for myself!

Needed Motivation - Alison's Ultimate Bootcamp Success Story

I always had a rule in college that I could either be doing schoolwork or working out. This rule kept me in pretty decent shape, but once I graduated, I had no pressure to work out anymore.

In the year I had been out of school, I’ve gained enough weight to outgrow all of my pants. I was pretty unhappy about the state of my body, but still couldn’t motivate myself to work out. I have never been a fan of group fitness classes, but my boyfriend loves boot camp classes and convinced me to just try it out.

Sweaty & sandy after Carson Beach Boot Camp

Well I tried it out and I am addicted, I really love Ultimate Bootcamp. Never have I worked out as hard as I do at boot camp. The group dynamic and the instructors really get me to push myself so much more than I ever would when working out by myself. After a session and a half, most of my pants are fitting again and after every class I feel fitter, stronger and faster.

Guest Post: Life Lessons Learned from Fitness

At Ultimate Bootcamp, we always love to hear from people who love health and fitness and get their perspective on what makes a great workout. This is the first in an ongoing series of fitness guest posts sharing fitness tips, advice and ideas for our Boston and Providence Ultimate Bootcampers and fitness enthusiasts!

Hi everyone! I’m Erin, and I am a yoga-loving, whole-food eating Creative Soul in Motion based in Boston. Through writing and coaching I empower people to find growth and happiness through active, courageous and mindful living.

Have you ever noticed that fitness instructors are a pretty wise and knowledgeable bunch? Not just about physical activities, but about life in general. In fact, I’ve found that most of the advice they give in class is valuable for life outside of a workout as well.

For instance, one of my spinning instructors starts every class with the resounding words: “this is YOUR ride, YOUR ride only.” It’s her way of reminding us to push ourselves rather than competing with our neighbor. This is great advice on and off the bike as I have recently understood that we’re all on different bikes. Not just in spinning class – but in life.

Every single one of us is as unique as our fingerprints: we have different backgrounds, history, lineage, passions, personalities, struggles, breakthroughs, paths. So why do we bother with jealousy and comparison when there is absolutely NO way to compare yourself to anyone else?! You can’t control anyone and you can’t be like anyone else – all you can do is live your own life and do the best you can. It truly is your ride, your ride only.

Another life lesson I learned through fitness was actually grasped on the yoga mat… It was the first time I nailed Crow – a super hard position where you essentially lean your entire body weight on your triceps while trying not to face plant into the ground. Well, I held the super hard position for 10 seconds (a record for me) – my instructor even clapped a little when she saw me – and just as I was about to come out of it I fell forward and then over, loudly landing in a pile on my yoga mat. Not only did my instructor notice, but the entire class did – and everyone was staring at me waiting for my reaction.

And at that moment I realized that I could take it way too seriously and get frustrated OR I could laugh at myself. So I laughed out loud, a big belly laugh and soon the whole class was laughing too. You know what? Not only did it make me realize how fun and silly the situation really was, but it also helped me feel confident to try again later. The world didn’t end when I fell over, so why get all upset? Why feel embarrassed or frustrated? I chose to see the humor instead and since then I’ve realized: Life is a lot more fun when you learn to laugh at yourself.

Lately I’ve been noticing that there are lots of these “learning moments” in my fitness classes:

During Zumba the instructors encourage us to “dance like no one is watching.”
My boxing coach reminds me “to focus on one thing, one thing only.”
And throughout sports conditioning the instructor yells at us to “give it our all.”

Not only is this advice useful in class but it’s valuable for all of life. These lessons aren’t meant to be left on the gym floor along with my sweaty towel. They’re meant to be taken to heart and carried with me throughout my day, throughout my life.

So I’m curious, what lessons have you learned through fitness? I’d love to hear them! You can share them in the comments here, or connect with me through Twitter (@IamCre8tiveSoul) or on Facebook.

Remember: Life is a daring adventure!
